Tired in the morning. Calf cramps. Restlessness before falling asleep. Three symptoms, one common cause: too little magnesium.

If you search the shelves for a suitable product, you quickly come across two terms: magnesium complex and vitamin B6. Both often appear together. Few explain why.

The short answer: The combination is not a marketing detail. It is synergy. Magnesium and vitamin B6 work together in the body, and one works better when the other is present. What really matters is which magnesium forms are used and whether the dosage is appropriate.

What is a magnesium complex?

A magnesium complex differs from a single-ingredient preparation in its composition. While a single-ingredient preparation contains only one magnesium compound (for example, pure magnesium citrate), a complex combines several different forms.

The reason for this lies in biochemistry. Different magnesium compounds are absorbed via different pathways in the intestine, reach different target tissues, and exert their effects at various places in the body. A complex covers more areas of action than a single-ingredient preparation.

Recharge combines five magnesium compounds with vitamin B6: magnesium bisglycinate, magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, magnesium ascorbate, and magnesium oxide. One capsule provides 300 mg of elemental magnesium and 100 µg of vitamin B6.

Why do magnesium and vitamin B6 belong together?

That is the core question. And it has a well-founded answer.

Vitamin B6 supports energy metabolism and the function of the nervous system. These are precisely the areas where magnesium also works. Both work at the same control points in the body, often even in the same enzyme processes.

The European Food Safety Authority has confirmed independent health claims for both nutrients. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, energy metabolism, and the normal functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B6 contributes to the reduction of fatigue, normal energy metabolism, normal psychological function, and the normal functioning of the nervous system.

The common ground is striking: fatigue, energy, nerves, psyche. Exactly where many people first feel the deficiency, magnesium and vitamin B6 work together. The combination is therefore not an arbitrary bundling, but rather reflects how the body uses these nutrients.

How do different forms of magnesium work?

Here lies the second key: Not every magnesium compound is absorbed equally well, and not every one works in the same place. The five forms in a high-quality magnesium complex each have their own character.

Magnesium bisglycinate is bound to the amino acid glycine. This form is considered particularly well-tolerated and highly bioavailable. Glycine itself has a calming effect on the nervous system, which makes bisglycinate particularly relevant for sleep, stress reduction, and mental recovery.

Magnesium citrate is probably the best-known form. Rapidly absorbed, highly bioavailable, traditionally used for muscle function and energy balance. A reliable building block in moderate doses.

Magnesium malate is bound to malic acid, which plays a direct role in the cells' energy metabolism. This form is often associated with ATP production and physical performance. Relevant for people who train a lot or suffer from chronic fatigue.

Magnesium ascorbate combines magnesium with vitamin C. A gentle form, stomach-friendly, with a small vitamin C contribution.

Magnesium oxide provides a very high density of elemental magnesium and ensures slower, more consistent release throughout the day. As part of a complex, it meaningfully supplements the organic forms.

Why is a combination better than a single-ingredient preparation?

The short answer: Because your body needs different things in different places.

Bisglycinate affects the nervous system differently than citrate affects muscles. Malate reaches different cellular processes than bisglycinate. A single-ingredient preparation always covers only one main area of effect. A complex covers more: nervous system, muscle, energy metabolism, sleep, regeneration.

My advice: If you want to address a single symptom (for example, acute constipation with citrate), you can opt for a single-ingredient preparation. If you use magnesium as a daily base, a well-formulated complex is a better choice. One capsule instead of five individual preparations.

How much magnesium does the body need daily?

The German Nutrition Society recommends 300 to 350 mg per day for adult women, 350 to 400 mg for adult men. In certain phases, the need is higher: during intensive sports, pregnancy, periods of stress, reduced food intake, or chronic sleep deprivation.

The EFSA sets the upper limit for magnesium from food supplements at 250 mg per day. You cover part of your needs through your normal diet. With one capsule of Recharge (300 mg elemental magnesium), you are reliably supplied, as long as you rely on high-quality, highly bioavailable forms.

When is the best time to take a magnesium complex?

There are two sensible times, depending on what you want to achieve.

With a complex, both are possible. The five forms work at different times, which makes the intake time flexible. What matters is regularity. One capsule every day, at the same time, ideally linked to a fixed moment in your daily routine.

Who particularly benefits from a magnesium complex with vitamin B6?

Four groups for whom the investment almost always pays off.

Athletes. Magnesium regulates muscle function; the demand increases with each training session. Cramps are often the first symptom that the demand is not being met.

People with high stress levels. Stress consumes magnesium. Vitamin B6 also supports psychological function. The combination works exactly where stress first affects the body.

People with sleep problems. Bisglycinate in combination with vitamin B6 can support sleep quality without having a sedative effect. An alternative or supplement to traditional sleeping aids.

Women with cycle-related complaints. Magnesium and vitamin B6 play a role in hormone balance. The need often increases before and during menstruation.
